Welcome from the Chair
Milwaukee, WI -- Dear Mass Communication Division Members,
A warm welcome to the convention issue of the Gatekeeper! It is that exciting time of the year again! I can’t believe we are less than two weeks away from the 102nd annual convention of NCA, in Philadelphia!
This year again we have an exciting line-up of convention presentations. I would encourage you to attend as many MCD sessions as you can. Of these sessions, I would recommend that you please attend the following three:
- the business meeting on Friday, November 11, 12.30-1.45pm. in Grand Salon D - Level 5
- the "Top Four Papers in Mass Communication" on Friday, November 11, 2-3.15pm, Grand Salon D - Level 5
- "Top Four Student Papers in Mass Communication" on Friday, November 11, 11am-12.15pm, Grand Salon D - Level 5
Another couple of interesting sessions this year, both chaired by our Ex-Chair, Srivi Ramasubramaniam, are the Media Activism and Social Justice: Conversation Cafés (8am-9.15am, Sat, Nov 12th) and the Media Activism and Social Justice: Interactive Workshop (9.30am-10.45am, Sat, Nov 12th), both in Grand Salon H - Level 5.
As I near the end of my term as division Chair, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all the MCD officers. In particular, I would like to express my gratitude to the members of the MCD Research Committee, particularly: Hugh Phillips Curnutt (Research Chair), James Durbin and Tracy Worrell. They have worked hard to put together an amazing line-up of sessions. I would also like to thank my Vice Chair, Narissra Punyanunt-Carter, for her work on the panel sessions and Vice-Chair Elect Meghan Sanders for her work on the MCD awards. Also, I would like to thank Zac Gershberg (our Publications & Web Editor) whose department has committed to fund our NCA MCD site for a two-year period and Srivi Ramasubramaniam, our past Chair, for helping me with much needed guidance and information through the last year.
Finally, I would encourage you to nominate yourself for one of the open officer positions for MCD this year. I have thoroughly enjoyed serving on different roles for the division and I have also met some amazing people who have inspired me with their selfless service to our division, profession, and field of mass communication! I know that we have many more inspirational leaders in our midst, so hope you decide to run for an officer position this year- the division needs you!
I look forward to seeing you all in Philadelphia! Safe travels to all of you!

Editor's Note
Pocatello, ID -- Please enjoy reading through this new issue of The Gatekeeper. We do not have a Gatekeeper Scholar Chat this issue but I hope to beat the drum in Philadelphia among our members to send nominations for the scholarly chats my way. I would, if a nomination comes in and it is logistically possible, conduct an interview in Philadephia and then post it here after returning.
I'd like to thank Sumana Chattopadhyay for a great year working side by side and wish her well moving forward. I look forward to continue working with both the membership and the leadership. To that end, if you see me in Philadelphia or if inspiration should strike during the year, please let me know what your ideas for The Gatekeeper are. I'd like to beef up the content a bit so as to interest our readers.
Finally, I wish everyone save travels and a productive convention. All the Best!
