Welcome from the Chair

College Station, Texas -- A warm welcome to another issue of The Gatekeeper!

Thanks to everyone who submitted their papers and panels to the 101st annual connection in November! By now, you have received acceptance notices on your submissions. We are excited about the innovative and diverse slate of competitive papers and panels that will be presented at this year’s convention, whose theme is “Embracing Opportunities.” Kudos and thanks to the MCD Research Committee and the Vice Chair for working hard on putting together a compelling program for NCA 2015 in Las Vegas from November 19-22.

This year NCA is introducing something called the “unit fair” where each division is invited to share an interactive display about their division. This is an opportunity for members to learn about the various units across NCA. Our division will be participating and is in the process of brainstorming ideas for the best way to represent our division. We would love to hear about any ideas you might have for us regarding the unit fair interactive display.

One of the best parts of my job as a MCD officer is recognizing stellar scholars, teachers, and mentors in our field through our annual awards. I encourage you to please nominate yourself or a colleague for the MCD teaching and service awards. Please also consider getting involved in the division by serving as an officer. I have found it to be a great way to make new friends beyond my campus and to learn about our field as a whole.

We look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas!

The aim of the volume is to investigate the role of communication and emotions in conflict contexts. It is proposed that the scope of this academic endeavour will cover the broadest sense of this field. This inter- and multi-disciplinary project invites submissions from a diverse range of disciplines including communication studies, public relations, philosophy, psychology, linguistics, literature, business studies, political science, education, cultural studies, gender studies, and
others.

Submissions are invited on the following topics that investigate the role of communication and emotions in conflict, but are not limited to these:

  • Individuals or groups in conflict
  • Online vs. face-to-face conflict situations and their dynamics
  • Cross-cultural influences on conflict dynamics
  • Influence of gender/age differences on conflict dynamics
  • Immigrant and host populations in conflict
  • Corporate conflict dynamics
  • Conflict and international relations
  • Theoretical bases to conflict dynamics
  • Theoretical bases to cross-cultural emotion dynamics
  • Role of media reporting in conflicts
  • Conflict and decision making

Submissions of abstracts (up to 500 words, with a bibliography that is not included in the word count) are invited by 30th June, 2015. These should be clear about the claim, materials, methods and conclusions, and provide a sample of the analysis.
