Welcome from the Chair

College Station, Texas -- Dear Mass Communication Division Members,

I would first like to thank our previous chair, Jennifer Stevens Aubrey, for her terrific leadership. I would also like to thank all our MCD officers for their tireless service to the division. Special thanks to our publications and web editor, Nick Bowman, for his efforts in keeping us abreast of latest updates from our division through our newsletter and social media activities.

The 101st NCA convention will be held in Las Vegas from Nov 19-22, 2015. The convention theme this year is “Embracing Opportunities.” Submissions are now accepted for our division. Please keep the deadline of March 25 (11:59 PM PACIFIC) in mind while planning to submit to the 2015 convention. More details about the convention can be found here.

At MCD, we pride ourselves on our diversity in terms of including a wide range of topics, theoretical perspectives, and methodologies. We accept individual competitive papers, paper sessions, and panel discussions. Please read our convention call for papers here.

I’d like to draw your attention to the new “Opportunity Series” for the 2015 convention. The six segments of this series will work towards pushing boundaries and exploring possibilities, and enabling us to think creatively about what can be and what should be. They are: Pedagogy, Research, Service, Technology and Community, Administration, and Beyond the Academy. Please note that these entries are NOT to be submitted to our division but directly to the series of your interest via the NCA Convention Central. Please click here to read the calls posted for the Opportunity Series.

Please be sure to select MCD as one of your membership divisions when you renew your NCA membership this year. Your membership makes a difference. It provides the division benefits such as more sessions at the convention, greater number of representatives at the NCA Legislative Assembly and the best times/venues for our division's sessions.

I look forward to meeting you in Las Vegas! In the meantime, be sure to keep up with MCD events and happenings through the Gatekeeper online, our MCD Facebook page, and twitter account (remember to add the hashtag #ncamcd to your tweets). Please do share any news and announcements that would be of relevance and interest to our members!

Please feel free to write to me if you have any questions or ideas relating to our division.

See you in Chicago!

The Gatekeeper: 20 years of MCD history

Morgantown, West Va. -- While of course the history of the Mass Communication goes much further past Winter 1996, we can trace back the history of our digital newsletter to that time. An excerpt from the inaugural Gatekeeper:

"This inaugural issue of the Mass Comm Division's Electronic Newsletter was prepared in December 1996 by Rebecca Ann Lind, 1997 Publications Committee, and Nancy Signorielli, 1996 Division Chair. It contains further information on topics contained in the traditional hard-copy newsletter, as well as additional topics. You'll still receive the traditional pre- and post-Convention newsletters each year, but the Electronic Newsletter will be distributed more often. We'll try for about 4 times per year to start, and hope to move to about bi-monthly. Make sure SCA headquarters has your correct e-mail address, and you won't miss a thing."

Although we haven't delivered on every promise in that first issue - there was a discussion about "Spotlight on..." profiles and a goal to deliver a bi-monthly newsletter - The Gatekeeper has continued to keep our 1000+ members connected with each other. Supplemented with a growing digital footprint to include MCD Facebook group as well as a growing Twitter hashtag (#ncamcd), MCD continues to look for ways to connect members beyond the week-long annual conference.

While you're enjoying 20(1), consider reading through The Gatekeeper archives for a peak in to our last 20 years ... perhaps you'll get an idea of where the next 20 years will go?

Thanks as always for reading, and please send any suggestions for the future of our publications along -- we'll communicate in as many channels as there are users. =)

New Master's Degree in Media Literacy and Digital Culture @ Sacred Heart U

Fairfield, Conn. -- ‌Sacred Heart University is announcing a new master’s degree in media literacy and digital culture expected to launch in the fall of 2015. The new program will be administered by the Department of Communication and Media Studies and will be based at the university’s main campus in Fairfield.

Read more about the program: info card (.pdf) and fact sheet (.pdf).

Our media programs at Sacred Heart focus on not just how to create media, but also how media impacts individuals and society,” says Lori Bindig, assistant professor of communication and media studies and director of the media literacy and digital culture program. “As a culture, we spend more and more time with media, and so it becomes increasingly important to understand its impact on us, on our children, on our politics—it affects everything.”

Bindig says the program entails a unique hands-on experience that allows students to create their own curriculum and material, depending on their interests.

“For example, teachers might come up with particular lesson plans that they could use with their students,” she says. “Or health professionals could create a handout of best practices to distribute to parents or patients. Students can partner with a non-profit and work with them to raise awareness about a particular issue,” she says.  The degree is also useful to media practitioners and corporate professionals who want to produce creative and ethical campaigns designed to reach a 21st century audience.

Bindig says there are only a handful of media literacy programs in the country, “and none of the others are set up this way, with this sort of embedded hands-on learning experience that helps the students, but also gives back to the wider community.”

Students will earn the degree in one of two tracks: Children, Health, and Media or Media and Social Justice. The master’s degree will consist of 36 credits that can be completed in as little as one year. Students may also enter the program for the purpose of earning a graduate certificate. Courses will include “Social Media and Culture,” “Children and Media,” “Media and Body Image,” “Sports, Culture, and Media,” “Media Ethics in a Professional Context,” “Media and Violence,” “Media and Social Movements” and “Multimedia Health Promotions.”The university will hire one additional full-time, tenure-track professor to bolster its faculty for the new program.

Those interested in the new master’s in media literacy and digital culture degree may attend an information session at the main campus on March 28 at 9:00 a.m. For details, contact Eva Magnuson at 203-371-7884 or magnusone@sacredheart.edu. View the program's fact sheet here or information card here.

Promotions, Awards, and Publications

Publications and Presentations

Nichola Gutgold (Pennsylvania State University) co-authored a children’s book (for ages 6-12) based on my communication research on women and the United State Presidency.  The book, co-authored with a Penn State Schreyer Scholar Abigail Kennedy is Madam President: Five Women Who Paved the Way (Eifrig Publishing, 2015).  Research conducted shows that when children see examples of non-traditional leaders they are more likely to believe that they can become something yet unachieved.

In January 2015, a documentary produced as part of a film course in the University of Memphis Department of Communication was awarded a regional Emmy by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The half-hour documentary, “Inside Story,” broadcast by public television station WKNO-TV (last summer), explores the compelling work of activist and storyteller Elaine Blanchard, who goes into the women’s prison in Memphis and teaches inmates how to write about their lives before they were incarcerated. Students researched and photographed the film under the direction of Associate Professor Craig Leake, whose documentaries have received nine Emmys and other awards. For the talented students on the production team, graduating seniors Kimberly Gill, Jeremy Donaldson, and Ranetta Jackson, and graduate student April Phillips, “Inside Story” was the first of their projects to become an Emmy award-winning television program.

Volume 20(1) will be online through to June/July 2015. Send our information to Webmaster Nick Bowman (Nicholas.Bowman@mail.wvu.edu) and we'll get it posted (and shared to the MCD Facebook group). We publish promotion and appointment information, award and grant information, as well as recent publications. Don't be shy - share your accomplishments with your fellow MCD members!
