In this issue:

Welcome from the Chair

Tucson, Ariz. -- MCD Members, welcome to another issue of The Gatekeeper. Thank you to everyone who submitted to MCD for the 100th annual convention in November! By now, you have received decision notices on your submissions, and the MCD Research Committee has been hard at work planning our panel sessions for NCA 2014 in Chicago from November 20-23. As usual, we have an exciting and diverse slate of competitive papers and panels on offer. We look forward to seeing you in Chicago!

One of the most rewarding aspects of attending NCA is interacting with colleagues across our discipline about new research that we have in the works. Oftentimes, though, NCA goes by too darn fast to make time for such meaningful interactions. In that vein, I want to encourage MCD members to take advantage of Roundtables on Research in Progress, designed to provide NCA members with an opportunity to receive feedback on scholarship that has yet to come to fruition. RRiP is accepting extending abstracts until 11:59 pm Pacific on July 16, 2014. Take advantage of this wonderful opportunity!

You can find the call on Submission Central (click on the View Calls menu). Or, just read below:

Roundtables on Research in Progress
Submissions Open: Fri, 6/13 2014 12:00 AM EDT
Roundtables on Research in Progress

NCA has a strong commitment not only to creating opportunities for formal presentation of completed research projects but also to nurturing research in progress. Roundtables on Research in Progress (RRiP) provides convention-goers with opportunities to discuss scholarship that has yet come to fruition (e.g., publication, presentation, performance, etc.).  The RRiPs are designed to facilitate conversations about the direction and challenges of current research projects that are not yet completed. Submissions to RRiP may be in various states of progress, e.g., question development, research or data collection, or draft stages. Criteria for selection will include 1) the clarity of the research question or research direction, 2) evidence of significant work on the project by, for example, situating the project in relevant literatures and 3) the articulation of the potential significance of the project.
Each Roundtable will be led by an established scholar. The roundtables will be composed of groups of four to six scholars who examine similar areas of study. Each group will meet for 75-minute informal, roundtable discussions of their current research projects. Each roundtable presenter will provide a 5 minute summary of her/his project for the table and pose questions to which s/he would like feedback. Next, the round table participants, including the RRiP leader, will provide approximately 10 minutes of feedback and suggestions to each presenter. This feedback will follow a set of suggested discussion questions provided by the planners.

Please submit an extended abstract, not to exceed 1,500 words, for consideration. The abstract should include a clear explanation of the research question or direction, explanation of research significance, positioning of the project in relevant literatures, articulation of project’s importance, and indication of the desired outcome for the project. The first-author of the paper may not be listed as the first author on another paper or scheduled as a presenter, chair or respondent on any session already accepted for the NCA 2014 convention.

Submissions should be made at NCA Submission Central.  Roundtables on Research in Progress will begin accepting submissions June 16, 2014 with a deadline of 11:59pm Pacific on July 16, 2014.

All submitters are encouraged to review the Professional Standards for Convention Participants prior to submission. Helpful resources, including live and recorded step-by-step instructions on how to submit, are available in the Convention Library.

Comments related to the content of RRiP submissions should be directed to Greg Dickinson, Colorado State University, Greg.Dickinson@ColoState.edu.

10 Doctoral students invited for NCADHS

College Park, Md. -- For over 40 years, NCA Doctoral Honors Seminars (DHS) have brought together promising doctoral students and distinguished faculty members from across the discipline and around the nation to discuss current topics in communication.

The 2014 NCA Doctoral Honors Seminar will be held July 17-20, 2014, in College Park, Maryland. The Department of Communication at the University of Maryland is the host for the 2014 DHS. The theme for the 2014 DHS is Research in Action, Research that Matters. In selecting this theme, the host department "was mindful of the imperatives in contemporary graduate education that encourage doctoral student contemplation of the social engagement potentialities of their research. Communication is a discipline committed to social and civic engagement by its very nature and the 2014 DHS theme brings that commitment forward as a focus for the seminar meetings."

Earlier in 2014, three faculty from our Division were selected to mentor students in the study of Mass Communication: Nick Bowman (West Virginia University), Maria Elizabeth Grabe (Indiana University), and Xiaoli Nan (University of Maryland). These faculty were invited to review competitive submissions from several Doctoral students, and extended invitations to the following Doctoral students. Please join MCD in congratulating the efforts of these students, as well as all of the students who applied for this year's program.

Mary Beth Oliver named ICA Fellow

ICALogoState College, Pa. -- Mary Beth Oliver, Distinguished Professor of Communications in the Department of Film-Video and Media Studies at Penn State and a former chair of our very own NCA Mass Comm Division, was selected as a 2014 Fellow of the International Communication Association.

Her nominator, Dr. Patti Valkenburg of the University of Amsterdam and also an ICA Fellow, wrote that “Professor Mary Beth Oliver is a true role model for all of us. She is one of the few researchers who has been able to creatively transcend and integrate different disciplines, such as communication, empirical literature research, and social psychology.”

“She has introduced several important concepts to our field and has had the creativity to take on research issues that no one before her has explored, such as how to explain why we choose entertainment that we can’t really enjoy and what do we get out of exposing ourselves to tragic stories? Her broad interdisciplinary research interest as well as her remarkable intellectual curiosity has led Professor Oliver to become one of the most creative scholars in the field of media effects and communication.”

She teaches media effects, communication research methods and data analysis. She has co-edited three books: Media and Social Life (2014, Routledge, with Arthur A. Raney), Handbook of Media Processes and Effects (2009, Sage, with Robin L. Nabi), and Media Effects: Advances in Theory and Research (2008, Routledge, with Jennings Bryant).  She has well over three dozen journal articles that have appeared in the Journal of Communication, Communication Research, and Human Communication Research, among many others.  She is currently an associate editor of the Journal of Media Psychology.

She is also a former recipient of our Division’s Excellence in Teaching Award, and has had two Top-Three Paper Awards in the Division. Congratulations Mary Beth!!

Sport Communication goes International . . . Again!

Tuscaloosa, Ala. -- Scholars of sport communication have a new interest group with the International Communication Association (www.icahdq.org). ICA members should select the interest group and those seeking outlets for their work can now look to ICA as a vehicle for the dissemination of their scholarship. The formation of the interest group comes on the heels of the creation of the International Association for Communication and Sport (www.communicationandsport.com). At the May 2014 ICA conference in Seattle, WA, Dr. Andrew Billings (University of Alabama) and Dr. Marie Harding (Penn State University) were unanimously elected chair and vice-chair, respectively. The group will accept submissions for the first time for the 2015 conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Papers, panels, roundtables and workshops related to any aspect of sport communication are welcome. You can find more information about the ICA Sport Interest Group on Twitter @ICASportComm (https://twitter.com/ICASportComm) or Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/252813711588424/).

Call for Papers
106th Annual ECA Convention
"Deliberation: Philadelphia"
April 22-26, 2015

Deadline: October 15

In 2015, we will gather in Philadelphia to deliberate on research, teaching ideas, and investigations into communication. We encourage you to engage with us in all levels of the convention, including through the submission of your research papers or creative panel program.

Be creative for Philadelphia! Proposals may take the form of a completed paper or audience-involving panel programs such as roundtables, workshops, debates, symposiums, community programs – or any other creative sessions. Keep in mind that while we will honor the theme of “deliberation” in our overall programming, your paper or proposal can create a space for deliberation without necessarily putting the word in the program title. To help with your submission, we offer these templates (these are to help with your formatting but please contact your Interest Group Planner to determine any specific requirements from individual groups)

Short Course Submission Template

Panel Submission Template

See [here] for a list of Interest Group and Affiliate Organization Planners, Special Session Directors, and Associate Organization contacts for the 2015 Convention. Please include the update Statement of Professional Responsibility on all submissions:

In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. If this submission is accepted and programmed, I/We agree to register for the 2015 ECA Convention, pay fees, and present in Philadelphia. I/We understand that presenters with last minute emergencies must make arrangements as possible for an alternate presenter as well as communicate their absences to both the Interest Group Planner and ECA VP; no shows will be removed from the official program.

We strongly encourage co-sponsorship of panels between Interest Groups in Philadelphia. If you believe that your proposal would serve the needs of more than one Interest Group or the general membership, submit (no later than the October 15, 2014 deadline) to the Primary Convention Planner (J. Kanan Sawyer: ecaphilly2015@gmail.com) as well as Interest Group Chairs for all potentially involved groups. As with paper and traditional panels, all co-sponsored panel submissions must go through peer-review and receive Interest Group and/or Primary Planner acceptance.

To have time to confirm programming into the 2015 convention, notification of acceptance will not be given until the review process and initial session programming is drafted. Convention Acceptance Notifications will be sent out by Friday, January 16, 2015.
