In this issue:

Welcome from the Chair

AndyDear Mass Communication Division members:

Now that the National Communication Association submission deadline for the 96th Annual Convention in San Francisco - "Building Bridges" - has officially passed, I can reflect on the flurry of activity that led up to it.

As Chair of the Mass Communication Division, I can report that by far the most frequent type of question that I fielded was in regard to proposals and their fit with division aims.

"Will a paper on x fit your expectations?"

"Does the division welcome film scholarship?"

"Is one epistemological approach tacitly endorsed more than others"?

While there was the occasional outlier that truly seemed to fit another division better than ours, it was nice to be able to generally promote a sense of inclusiveness in my responses. The NCA Mass Communication Division has always provided itself on examining a plethora of worthwhile issues from a multitude of perspectives. As the program for San Francisco is revealed in the coming months, take note of both the breadth and depth of scholarship sponsored by our division...and also write down the tiem for the MCD business meeting, as we hope to see you there!

Pollock, professor of communication studies at The College of New Jersey, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and conduct research at the University of Belgrano, Buenos Aires, Argentina, during the spring, 2010, academic semester, according to the United States Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

Pollock will teach and carry out research on his project exploring society’s impact on media: linking social inequality in demographic structures of cities or nation-states to coverage of critical issues.  Pollock will work with students to help them conduct cross-national research comparing the relation between a variety of national "structural" characteristics (e.g., GDP/capita, literacy rate, infant mortality rate) and variations in major newspaper reporting on critical issues such as AIDS, poverty, healthcare reform, etc. The title of Pollock’s project replicates the title of his latest book: Tilted Mirrors: Media Alignment with Political and Social Change – A Community Structure Approach

The Fulbright Program, America’s flagship international educational exchange program, is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Since its establishment in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Fulbright Program has provided approximately 286,500 people – 108,160 Americans who have studied, taught or researched abroad and 178,340 students, scholars and teachers from other countries who have engaged in similar activities in the United States – with the opportunity to observe each others' political, economic, educational and cultural institutions, to exchange ideas and to embark on joint ventures of importance to the general welfare of the world's inhabitants. The Program operates in over 155 countries worldwide.

Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. Among the thousands of prominent Fulbright alumni are: Muhammad Yunus, Managing Director and Founder, Grameen Bank, and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006; Javier Solana, Foreign Policy Chief, European Union; Ruth Simmons, President, Brown University; Craig Barrett, Chairman of the Board, Intel Corporation; Shamshad Akhtar, the first woman to hold the position of Governor, State Bank of Pakistan; Alejandro Jara, Deputy Director-General, World Trade

First Annual DOCUTAH International Documentary Film Festival - Dixie State College

DOCUTAHSt. GEORGE, Utah -- Have you ever seen a film that made you laugh? Cry? Taught you something about yourself? Or about the world around you? Documentary films play an important part in the way we communicate with one another.  DOCUTAH is a documentary only film festival, nestled in the red rocks and slot canyons of majestic southern Utah. By blending the attractions of the area with a love of documentaries, we hope that many professional and student film makers embrace what DOCUTAH has to offer. Brace yourselves because DOCUTAH has arrived—now and for the future; 2010 is just the beginning.

Being one of the few college-based festivals, much of DOCUTAH will take place on Dixie State College’s campus, including master class seminars taught by internationally renowned guest lecturers who are industry professionals. With a focus on independent films looking for distribution, DOCUTAH will also feature a distributor’s marketplace – an invaluable networking hub.

Two spectacular gala events will be held in majestic outdoor settings.  The opening gala (Thursday, September 16th) at Tuacahn Amphitheater and Center for the Arts will be a night not soon forgotten.  "Tuacahn" comes from a Mayan word meaning "Canyon of the Gods." Built in the shadow of 1500-foot spectacular red rock cliffs, Tuacahn was created to awaken the nobility of the human soul and transmit light and hope to people everywhere through the arts and education. A special closing gala (Friday, September 24th) will be held in Kanab, Utah.

Come for the films…come for the view…this region’s geography has always been a big draw.

Outdoor screenings will be held at the St. George Town Square, which features the 45-foot Heritage Tower with four, eight-foot stained glass windows that depict moments in St. George’s history known as “Portholes of the Past.” A special screening will also be at the Dixie State College O.C. Tanner Amphitheater—a stunning 2,000 seat venue surrounded by the cliffs of Zion National Park—in Springdale, Utah.

Home to the stars in Utah’s Little Hollywood, Parry Lodge will serve as a DOCUTAH festival “hub” in Kanab, Utah. Founded in 1931 Parry Lodge has hosted some of the biggest names from the golden age of Hollywood. John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, Gregory Peck, Maureen O'Hara, Anne Bancroft, Dean Martin, Lana Turner, and Clint Eastwood are just a few of the hundreds of stars that stayed at Parry's while filming in and around Kanab. Films will be screened at the Old Barn Playhouse, which sits in the center of the Parry Lodge complex.  It is nearly 100 years old and was once used to stable famous horses for their famous riders. Roy Roger’s “Trigger”, the Lone Ranger's “Silver,” and Tonto’s “Scout” are just a few of its former equine guests. In addition, Frontier Movie Town will host an outdoor screening in the midst of historic movie sets.  This venue keeps alive the spirit of the American West and is the only place where you can still visit sets from Kane County’s “Little Hollywood” glory days.

2010 Summer Doctoral Seminar
Thinking Dangerously: Teaching, Research, and Public Scholarship
about Communication, Disaster, and Risk
Wayne State University Department of Communication
June 9-13, 2010 in Detroit, Michigan
www.comm.wayne.edu/summerseminar.php

Deadline is Monday March 15, 2010

People need to communicate when a disaster strikes, whether it’s a hurricane, an airline crash, or an oil spill. Families talk to families, officials talk to voters and to each other, experts talk to citizens, and the media talk to everyone. But what affects how those needs are met — how do officials and publics know what they need, and how do the media know whether they are leading or misleading? This seminar offers an intensive look at how practice informs theory — and how theory helps build better practice — in a communication field of immense public, scholarly, and professional concern.

Amy VillarejoLillian C. (Lee) Wilkins (PhD, University of Oregon, 1982) is a professor at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, with a joint appointment in the Harry S. Truman School of Public Affairs. She is author or co-author of a number of books on science, risk, and disaster communication as well as scholarly and practice-oriented volumes on media ethics — a field in which she also edits a leading journal, the Journal of Mass Media Ethics. Dr. Wilkins is a consultant for federal and nongovernmental agencies on risk communication issues and developed a series of workshops for journalists on covering disasters and terrorism. A former newspaper reporter and editor herself, she is frequently interviewed on risk communication and ethics issues by regional and national news media outlets. She also coordinates the “Preparing Future Faculty” program for the Missouri graduate school.

All PhD students interested in being exposed to leading communication research and theory are encouraged to apply.  Most expenses for accepted candidates will be paid by the Department of Communication at Wayne State University.  Covered expenses include airfare, lodging & meals, and course materials.  A welcoming reception and social events will give participants time to get to know each other and to discuss and exchange ideas.

A small group of doctoral students from throughout the nation will be selected to join this unique program. Application deadline is March 15, 2010. The application form is available at www.comm.wayne.edu/summerseminar.php, and a current curriculum vitae can be sent to wsudocsem@gmail.com.

Academic Lessons From Video Game Learning
National Science Foundation (NSF)-sponsored conference
Fordham University, Lincoln Center Campus
October 7-10, 2010 in New York, NY

Deadline is Sunday, March 21, 2010

This conference is designed to bring together leading researchers and practitioners from developmental and cognitive psychology, communications, media, and game design to examine how learning transfers from video game play to the elementary and secondary school classroom. This issue remains largely unaddressed despite a growing body of literature linking video game play to improvement in spatial skills (Green & Bavelier, 2003; Greenfield, Brannon, & Lohr, 1994; Subrahmanyam & Greenfield, 1996), problem solving and inductive reasoning (Blumberg, 1998; 2000; Greenfield, Camaioni et al., 1994; Rosas et al., 2003), and attention (Green & Bavelier, 2003; 2006a).
Invited conference attendees represent leading national and international researchers and practitioners in developmental and cognitive psychology, media, communications, and game design (See attached list of conference attendees). Talks and activities during the conference will address:

  • cognitive skills and content knowledge that children and adolescents acquire and refine during video game play;
  • game features that captivate and promote skill development among game players; and
  • evidence of skill and content knowledge transfer from video game play to the classroom context among game players of different ages.

Discussion of these issues will then provide the basis for the culminating activity of the conference: specification of the most appropriate research agenda to investigate the academic potential of video game play, particularly using those games that child and adolescent players find most compelling.
A major goal of the conference is to establish a new interdisciplinary community of researchers, practitioners who share a common interest in examining the ramifications of children’s video game play for academic learning. To facilitate participation among new scholars interested in joining this community, three scholarships designated for post-docs and graduate students will be awarded to defray costs of travel to and hotel stay during the conference.

Those interested in applying for Conference Scholarship should submit, via email only, the following by Sunday March 21, 2010:

  • A letter of interest that includes 1) a general statement of how attending the conference will further your career goals and, 2) demonstration of expertise relevant to the conference goals.
  • A vita that includes name, address, institution, telephone, fax, e-mail, educational background, awards, professional publications and presentations, teaching experience, and service activities relevant to the conference goals.
  • A letter of recommendation from your advisor, major professor, or dissertation chair sent directly to the conference chair.

All email attachments, and general questions about the conference, should be sent to the conference chair, Fran Blumberg, (blumberg@fordham.edu).  Only complete applications will be considered by the conference chair and a review committee consisting of a subset of conference attendees representative of academic and media-industry perspectives. Priority will be given to student applications from under-represented minorities, women, and persons with disabilities.
