Mass Communication Division
National Communication Association
March 2007
Published three times annually by the Mass Communication Division of NCA.
Publications Editor - Adam Earnheardt, Youngstown State University

In this issue:

Welcome from the Chair
J. Emmett Winn, Auburn University

Greetings to all members of the Mass Communication Division. I hope that you are all settling back into your routines after completing your NCA submissions for our 2007 convention in Chicago. I know that your submissions are in good hands with division Vice Chair Lance Holbert and Research Committee Chair Heather Hundley in charge of the selection process for our division.

I also extend a special welcome to our new members and our student members. We had a great turnout at our business meeting in San Antonio with many new faces apparent. This is further proof of our division’s vitality. I encourage all of you to attend our business meeting in Chicago and to get involved in the division by volunteering to serve on committees and/or nominating yourself for officer positions. I’ve found serving the division to be very rewarding.

One of the most rewarding aspects of serving the division is getting to know and work with top people in our field. For the two last years, I’ve had the pleasure of working with past chairs Mehdi Semati and Kristen Harrison. These folks are great leaders and I’ve learned a good deal from them. Thanks Mehdi and Kris!

The 2007 convention in Chicago promises to be very interesting. The theme is "Communicating Worldviews: Faith-Intellect-Ethics." I believe that mass communication scholars have a great deal to offer on this topic and I’m looking forward to seeing you all at our panels.

The division officers will be hard at work until we gather in Chicago. In the meantime, I hope that you will contact us with your ideas, questions, and concerns. Thank you for all of your help.

J. Emmett Winn, Chair
Mass Communication Division, NCA

Tips for Beginners
Jakob D. Jensen, University of Illinois

Do you study mass communication? Are you interested in submitting "something" to NCA? Great! The Mass Communication Division (MCD) accepts two kinds of submissions: papers and panels. This website is set up to help with the paper submission process. If you are interested in submitting a panel, please refer to the panel submission guidelines in the current call for papers (available at the NCA website: www.natcom.org). If you are interested in submitting a paper, then the following information may prove helpful.

A few general guidelines for paper submissions:

Although it is customary for some conferences to ask for paper abstracts, NCA (generally speaking) only accepts full manuscripts.

The MCD has several paper competitions. After papers are submitted, they are assigned to reviewers. The reviewers score the manuscripts across several dimensions, including clarity, content, theoretical impact, and overall quality. Reviewer scores are used to decide what papers are accepted to the conference. In addition, papers receiving the highest marks are formally acknowledged as "top papers" and showcased on a top papers panel (e.g., the MCD typically has a "Top 3 papers" panel where the top three papers in the division are presented). The MCD also gives a "top student paper" award to the student paper receiving the highest reviewer scores. Because the division is large, it is not unusual for the MCD to give more than one top student paper award.

CFP - Ohio Communication Association
Adam Earnheardt, Youngstown State University

71st ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Saturday, October 6, 2007
Holiday Inn in Boardman, OH
www.hiboardman.com
(15 minutes from Youngstown State University)

Change, Challenge & Opportunity: Communication in the 21st Century

Researching and understanding the role of communication in our daily lives is an ongoing process. As teachers and scholars of communication, we are continually challenged to address the changes that impact the ways in which we interact with one another. One example of a challenge that has emerged involves exploring the role of computer-mediated communication and the ways in which it has changed how we create and share meanings. Another example of a challenge to our interactions is the result of our increased ability to communicate with those from other cultures. With these challenges come opportunities for the ways in which we teach and research communication across contexts. The prospects for revising existing theories and developing new explanations for communication phenomena are endless.

The 2007 Ohio Communication Association convention theme invites scholars and teachers to address the changes experienced within our discipline, identify the challenges that have resulted from these changes, and explore opportunities for teaching and researching these issues.

The Ohio Communication Association offers professors, graduates, and undergraduate students an opportunity to share ideas for teaching and research, and to develop relationships with Ohio communication professionals. OCA is open to all communication professionals, and we believe you have so much to offer. Plan to share your talents with OCA in 2007.

Submissions are encouraged in the following areas:

  • Debut presentations by faculty and students

  • G.I.F.T.S. (Great Ideas for Teaching Speech)

  • Demonstrations of innovative instructional methods

  • Teaching or research challenges

  • Program assessment and issues of accreditation

  • Statewide issues or concerns for the discipline

  • Further developing OCA to meet the needs of its constituents

  • Specific university, private college, community college, or high school issues or concerns

  • Workshops for undergraduate or graduate success in the discipline

  • Hands-on workshops on topics relating to research or to specific topic areas (technology in the classroom, the basic course, developing critical thinking, the at-risk student, etc.)

Sharon R. Mazzarella, Clemson University

Mediated Youth, Vol. 2
Sharon R. Mazzarella, General Editor

Grounded in cultural studies, books in this series will study the cultures, artifacts, and media of children, tweens, teens, and college-aged youth. Whether studying television, popular music, fashion, sports, toys, the Internet, self-publishing, leisure, clubs, school, cultures/activities, film, dance, language, tie-in merchandising, concerts, subcultures, or other forms of popular culture, books in this series go beyond the dominant paradigm of traditional scholarship on the effects of media/culture on youth. Instead, authors endeavor to understand the complex relationship between youth and popular culture. Relevant studies would include, but are not limited to studies of how youth negotiate their way through the maze of corporately produced mass culture; how they themselves have become cultural producers; how youth create “safe spaces” for themselves within the broader culture; the political economy of youth culture industries; the representational politics inherent in mediated coverage and portrayals of youth; and so on. Books that provide a forum for the “voices” of the young are particularly encouraged. The source of such voices can range from in-depth interviews and other ethnographic studies to textual analyses of cultural artifacts created by youth.
