	News from the Division Chair
Greetings to all members of the Mass Communication Division, and a warm
welcome to new members and to our student members.  We have had another
eventful year. We have continued our leaning of the online paper submission
system. We maintained the number of assigned slots of 45. The total number
of assigned slots had expanded from 21 to 45 last year (a policy change
meant that allocations be based on membership size). We were thrilled to see
that the increaser in the slot expansion was accompanied by an increase in
paper submission. As you see in Research Committee by Lance Holbert and Kris
Harrison, we had a 31% increase in the number of competitive papers
submission. That increase was primarily related to the higher number of
student paper submission. I want to thank Kris and Lance for the impeccable
job they have done. They handled the glitches of the online system with
patience and diligence. I also want to thank the Division members who served
as the reviewers. We would not have such a strong Division without your
support. I would like to thank the other officers in the Division who have
been helping behind the scene in different ways
I would like to point out that we have a new website
	for the Division (http://www.clarion.edu/ncamass/index.shtml).
In addition to the Welcome Note from the Chair, which serves as an
introduction to the Division for those who seek us in various capacities,
other useful information and links are there for the membership of the
Division. I would like to thank Adam Earnheardt, our Interim Web
Wizard/Publications Editor, for his work on the website and the Newsletters.
I invite the members to visit the website, and offer us (Adam) feedback with
	ideas.
The Division officers look forward to another
productive year.  Please offer us your suggestions and ideas of ways to make
our 2005 Boston convention a success.  Thanks for all your help.
I hope you are having a wonderful summer. I look
forward to seeing you all in Boston.

	Research Committee Report
Kristen Harrison, University of Illinois, and Lance Holbert, University of
Delaware, offer the following report concerning competitive paper and panel
submissions to the Mass Communication Division for the 2005 convention to be
held in Boston. The Division received a total of 140
competitive paper submissions (a 31% increase from the previous year). The
increase in submissions is directly related to the high number of student
paper entries. Student submissions made up a little more than half of all
competitive paper entries for this year’s competition. A total of 93 of 140
paper submissions were accepted for presentation at the upcoming conference
(66.4% paper acceptance rate). These 93 works have been placed into a total
of 27 competitive paper sessions. All competitive papers were assigned to
three reviewers, with a vast majority of submitted works receiving this
number of completed reviews. We wish to take a moment to thank the more than
100 competitive paper reviewers who volunteered to help out with this year’s
paper competition. Your expertise and professionalism made the competition a
success. Given the high number of student paper
submissions, the Research Committee, with good counsel from the other
Division officers, created a Top 3 Student Paper session in addition to the
traditional Top 3 Paper session for the Division. The following is a listing
of the Top Paper award winners from this year’s competition –
congratulations to all the authors: Top 3 Papers:
“The Implications of Aversive Racism and Social
Identity on the Influence of Television Exposure on Evaluations of
Latinos,” Dana Mastro, University of Arizona and Maria Kopacz, University
      of Arizona. “Reassessing Communications Research’s
Potential Contribution to Communications Policy: The Case of Media
Owndership and the Diversity Index,” Philip Napoli, Fordham University and
Nancy Gillis, Fordham University. “Minorities in Prime
Time: A Look at Occupations and Occupational Prestige,” Nancy Signorielli,
      University of Delaware.

    Top 3 Student Papers:
“The Nouveau ‘Reach’: An Ideological Analysis of
Class and Consumerism in reality Television,” Lisa Glebatis, University of
Texas-Austin. “’The Daily Show’ with Jon Stewart: A
Citizen’s Guide to Journalism and Politics in the 21st Century,” Karen
      McCullough, Pennsylvania State University. “Action
Movie Arabs and the National Interest or ‘How I Learned to Stop Worrying
and Love American Empire: US Popular Culture and US Foreign Policy,”
      Nessim Watson, University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

A total of 16 created panels were submitted to this
year’s competition, with 9 being granted slots at the conference (56% panel
acceptance rate). The accepted panels were well received by the reviewers
and reflect the diverse interests that are embodied within the Mass
Communication Division. We wish to thank everyone who
submitted competitive papers and panels for the upcoming National
Communication Association conference. In addition, many thanks to all who
volunteered their time and expertise to review the various works submitted
to the Division. The Division was able to fill all of its 45 assigned slots
and this speaks well to the health and vitality of our association. <<back to top>>

	Call for Nominations for 2004-05
    Officers
The Mass Communication Division Nominations Committee is seeking nominations
and self-nominations for division officer positions for 2005-2006.
Nominations are sought for the offices of (1) Vice Chair Elect, (2)
Secretary, (3) Research Committee Member, (4) Publications Editor, (5)
Nominations Committee Members (five positions), (6) Graduate Student
Representative, (7) Representative to the NCA Nominating Committee, and (8)
Representatives to the NCA Legislative Council.
If you or someone you know is interested in serving, please contact Cindy
    Lont, clont@gmu.edu, Nominations
    Committee Chair.
	Vice-Chair Elect:
The year that a person is elected to vice-chair elect, that person will be
responsible for overseeing the announcements of the teaching/service awards,
and for selecting the award winner (with help from other members of
committee). The following fall, when the person assumes the position of
vice-chair, this position entails going to the program planning meeting at
NCA, distributing the call for papers at the business meeting, and making
sure that the call for papers is given to the program planners. As
vice-chair, the person assumes the responsibility of program planner for the
division, overseas the judging of panel submissions, and, with the aid of
the chair of the research committee, arranges panels and competitive papers
into sessions that are submitted to the NCA program planners for
consideration. The responsibilities involved in this position are heaviest
immediately after the convention, in February and March when division
members submit papers and proposals, and during the convention itself when
    planning meetings occur.
	Secretary:
The secretary assumes responsibility for creating and maintaining a record
of communication and events at the business meeting during our annual
convention. The secretary’s position spans two years. The first year the
secretary takes notes during the meeting, following the format set in
previous years. Election results will occur simultaneously during regular
business. Those notes should be organized and put into a word process file
as soon as possible after the meeting and distributed to the vice chair and
secretary for review. After any corrections, a permanent version of the
notes can be sent to other officers and printed for inclusion in the
archive. The second year the secretary is responsible for distributing the
notes to meeting attendees and presenting the notes formally at the
    beginning of the business meeting.
	Research Committee:
The person who is elected as a member of the Research Committee will stay on
the committee for three years. The first year as a member of the Research
Committee, the second year as the Chair-Elect, and the third year as the
Chair of the Research Committee. The responsibilities of the first two years
on the Committee are mainly to assist the work of the Chair, and to be
determined by the Chair. The third year as the Chair of the Committee, the
person will coordinate convention paper reviews for the Division, and
program competitive paper sessions based on the results of the reviews.

    Publications Editor:
The job of the Publications officer is to serve as a conduit of information
among NCA Mass Communication Division members and does the following three
    things:

Maintain the email list by updating it periodically (i.e., there is a
constant churn in the list as new members join, some change addresses, and
    others drop out, etc.).

Writing and dispersing via e-mail three e-newsletters (e.g., in February,
    June, October/November).

Maintaining a e-mailing list can be time consuming, as can editing and
    producing newsletters.

The position is enjoyable and is an important professional service. Many
members of the Mass Communication Division rely heavily on the newsletter,
especially the electronic newsletter, for relevant information about
    research, careers, and the profession.
Nominations Committee: (five people elected, including Chair)
The Chair of the Nominations Committee solicits self and other nominations
from various MCD positions from members of the Mass Communication Division
and from members of the Nominating Committee. It is wise to solicit and
receive such nominations by the end of the summer prior to the NCA annual
meeting. In consultation with members of the Nominating Committee, the Chair
seeks and receives input about the nominees and finalizes a slate of
candidates for each position. With the assistance of Committee members, the
Nominating Committee Chair conducts the elections during the MCD’s Business
Meeting at the NCA Annual Convention.
	Graduate Student Representative:
This person serves as a “voice” representing graduate student interests in
the division, relaying issues of interest and concern to officers within the
    division.
Representative to the NCA Nominating Committee:
The N CA Nominating Committee is responsible for preparing a slate for the
election of the second Vice President, for the at-large members of the
Legislative Council and for the at-large members for the Committee on
    Committees.
Representatives to the NCA Legislative Council (2 people):
The Legislative Assembly is the principal policy making body of NCA.
It is responsible for establishing internal and external policies and for
managing the association’s resources and programs. Representatives must come
to the convention early for the first Legislative Council meeting. We
encourage all faculty including junior faculty members to apply for this
    rewarding experience.

receive the award. The MCD reserves the right to not give any awards. <<back to top>>

	New Book Announcement
Girls, the Internet, and the Negotiation of Identity

	Edited by: Sharon R. Mazzarella

	Paperback: 240 pages
Publisher: Peter Lang Publishing (March 2005)
	ISBN: 0820471178
Given the rapidly growing presence of girls online,
serious academic inquiry into the relationship between girls and the
Internet is imperative. Girl Wide Web is an innovative collection of
cutting-edge research exploring a wide sweep of issues related to the ways
adolescent girls interact with the Internet. Employing a range of
methodologies and theoretical perspectives primarily within cultural
studies, the authors examine a variety of topics--from instant messaging and
web-diaries to online fan communities and Internet advertising that targets
young girls. Taken together, these essays provide a rich portrait of the
complex relationship among girls, the Internet, and the negotiation of
	identity.
